Getting measured for bespoke shoes or lasts

The last is the soul of the shoe. It is crucial to get it right for the shoe to be comfortable and look nice.

Make sure to follow all instructions correctly. I am of course here to help out. Just schedule a call and I will help you take the measurements.

Before starting out

- Get ready a measuring tape, a piece of paper, a pen and a ruler,
- Have somebody that can help you take the measurements,
- Wear the socks you are planning to wear with the shoes.

Marking the length

Get a piece of paper and stand on it against a wall.

This will allow us to get the length measurement precise. Take a pen and a ruler and mark a line right where your toes end.

Creating the outline

Take a step away from the wall - it will be more comfortable to draw the outline that way. Draw the outline of your foot while keeping the pen at a 90° angle.

Marking the instep

Mark the instep of your foot keeping the pen at 45 degrees angle.

the first measurement

  1. Find the bones on each side of your foot (as shown in the illustration) and use a measuring tape to get the size. Use moderate pressure - the shoe will have the same ammount of pressure. Too little and your foot will slide, too much and it will hurt you.
  2. Lay the tape down and mark alongside it - just like you see in the illustration.
  3. Note the measurement between the lines you have just made.

the second measurement

Repeat the same process as before. Measure from the same place on the inside, but go past the bone on the outside.

the third measurement

  1. Find the beginning of your Metatarsal bone - you can feel with your hand and  find a bump in the location shown in the illustration.
  2. Repeat the same process as above.

the fourth measurement

  1. Find the peroneal notch and the top of your instep - the top of your instep is where your foot suddently start climbing (marked with a green arrow). The peroneal notch is a bone on the outside of your foot, right below the top of your instep where you can feel a bump.
  1. Measure around both these points and repeat the same process as above.

the long heel measurement

  1. Place your tape as far down as possible on your heel and hug it around your foot.
  2. Put the 0 on the tape on the Metatarsal bone you have found in the 3rd measurement.
  3. Bring the other end of the tape to the same point and read the measurement.
  4. Write down somewhere on the paper: long heel - x.

the short heel measurement

  1. Place your tape as far down as possible on your heel and hug it around your foot,
  2. Put the 0 on the tape on the top of your instep,
  3. Bring the other end of the tape to the same point and read the measurement.
  4. Write down somewhere on the paper: short heel - x.

take four pictures

For the last step take your sock off and take four ground level pictures of your foot - one from each side.

That's it!

This is how your paper should look like now that you are finished.

If you think that one of your feet is considerably different from the other - repeat the process for the other foot as well.

That's it!
